Swedish Universities & University Colleges — Short version of Annual Report 2012

2012:18 R

Trends and Developments in Swedish Higher Education

Higher education in Sweden is provided at some fifty universities, university colleges and other institutions that vary greatly in size and degree of specialisation. This summary gives an outline picture of higher education activities in Sweden.

In 2011 there were still a large number of students, 363 000, pursuing first and second-cycle studies even though there were somewhat fewer than in the preceding year. During recent years the students entering higher education for the first time have been getting younger. In the academic year of 2010/11 19-year-olds accounted for 30 per cent of higher education entrants in Sweden.

2011 was the first year in which application fees and tuition fees were introduced in Sweden for students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who are not taking part in exchange programmes. This led to a significant decline in the number of applicants to international courses and programmes.
