Entrepreneurship, Innovation and the University of Tomorrow


Aalto University — the Finnish University of Innovation

Universities are being driven to embrace new initiatives to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem around them that can do two things well: spur economic growth by producing new products and spur services as well as the companies to market and sell them; and to have a more direct impact on developing solutions to the so-called “wicked problems" the earth is experiencing like climate change, public health, illiteracy, etc. 

While universities have always been a key player in its community, today the scale of the challenges mandate a more conscious and systematic approach to enabling innovation and entrepreneurship. This talk will draw on recent research around how a research university can catalyze the ecosystem around it, and show some case studies from the Nordic Region and the US that have been created to address these issues and show some of the early results.

Will Caldwell is currently Head of the Aalto University Center of Entrepreneurship.  Prior to that he has held positions at Technopolis Ventures (CEO), Conor Venture Partners, Valimo Wireless (CEO), Eqvitec Partners (partner), Eqvitec Advisors (CEO), LTT Research, (director), AIG (analyst). He is or has been on the board of more than 15 companies. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Davidson College and an MBA from the Helsinki School of Economics.  He completed three years of doctoral studies in finance at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a PhD is pending.  He has authored a number of articles and books.
