There are sixteen national doctoral schools in Sweden that are directly funded by the Government. These were set up primarily to establish if the quality of third cycle (doctoral) programmes would be improved if they were conducted within the framework of doctoral schools rather than in the traditional manner, and to improve collaboration between universities and university colleges that do not have the right to award their own doctorates.The sixteen doctoral schools specialise in the following areas:
