Universities and university colleges
The majority of universities and university colleges are public authorities. A number of universities and university colleges are self-governing and independent and operate on the basis of an agreement with the Government.The differences between universities and university colleges are not always substantial.
Universities
Universities have degree awarding powers at: - First cycle (University diplomas and Bachelors' degrees)
- Second cycle (one-year and two-year Masters' degrees)
- Third cycle (licentiate and doctoral degrees).
In addition, they have: - Entitlement to direct government funding for research.
University colleges
University colleges have degree awarding powers at: - First cycle (University diplomas and Bachelors' degrees)
- Second cycle (one-year Masters' degrees)
- Entitlement to apply to Högskoleverket (Swedish National Agency for Higher Education) for the entitlement to award two-year Masters' degrees and third cycle qualifications in specific domain/s.
