
Higher education in Sweden is provided at some fifty universities, university colleges and other institutions that vary greatly in size and degree of specialisation. 2009 was characterised by a substantial expansion of education at the first and second-cycle levels. The relevant age groups were at their peak in this year and, at the same time, the economic recession impeded entry into the labour market. As a result, the number of entrants into higher education broke all records.
