The number of applications submitted during the year to amend requirements was relatively small. During 2004 the Agency received and appraised five applications to stipulate requirements other than the standard eligibility requirements. Three of these concerned programmes that lead to the award of a vocational degree. The remaining two applications concerned single-subject courses intended to provide in-service training for teachers who did not have teaching qualifications.
The eligibility requirements that the institutions desired to stipulate for these programmes involved ensuring that students had attained a least the grade of pass in certain upper-secondary subjects such as the A-course in Mathematics. For the course for teachers it was desired to require completion of a programme for day-care nurses or some other relevant vocational training of at least two years together with vocational experience as a teacher. One application (for a programme for ambulance nurses) involved requiring a B-class driving licence and one year of general work experience.
The National Agency for Higher Education has granted all the applications submitted during 2004. In each case the decision was based on an appraisal of whether the admission requirement was essential in relation to the contents of the programmes and the student groups they are intended for.
